Waste not, want knot: Kangaroos on the ropes in FNQ

Old mooring ropes from Far North Queensland tug, Tusker, have been put to new use as climbing frames for rescued tree kangaroos.

Andy Thieme, Engineer from our Cairns port, suggested the reuse of the ropes and kindly donated them to the Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre Ltd, near Malanda on the Atherton Tablelands in Far North Queensland.

The tree kangaroo is superb climber and capable of leaping long distances, so the ropes have been used to furnish new enclosures, creating plenty of climbing material and assisting younger joeys learning how to climb.

With the centre relying on donations for the day-to-day care and feeding of the 22 tree kangaroos, the ropes were a valued donation. Dr Karen Coombes, Director, Tree Roo Rescue and Conservation Centre, thanked the Far North Queensland team for their initiative,

“I would like to thank your team from the Tusker at Mourilyan Harbour at Svitzer Australia. They (the ropes) are a valuable addition to our new enclosures we are currently building, and we are extremely grateful for your donation.”
