Supporting Quandamooka Jarjums in 2021

Last week, Svitzer Australia was proud to support the annual weeklong Quandamooka Jarjums Camp held at Cylinder Beach campground on Stradbroke Island, Queensland – Australia.

The camp is a unique Indigenous cultural immersion program, where Indigenous students from the surrounding areas get together and take part in a wide range of cultural activities. For many of the students this is the first opportunity to learn first-hand about their local culture.

This is the third year Svitzer Australia has joined long-term sponsors DP World Australia and Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd in supporting the event.

Early in the week on Tuesday before the camp kicked off, Craig Worling, Brisbane Port Manager, Warren Angland, Regional Manager – Dockings Projects, Paul Maguire, Technical and Operations Assistant joined representatives from DP World and Port of Brisbane in helping to set up the camp, on a bright sunny day – despite less than favourable weather forecasts!

Craig Worling, Port Manager for Svitzer Australia’s Brisbane operation said:

On Thursday, Emma Yabsley, HR Business Partner and Craig joined the students and other volunteers for a day’s worth of activities which included traditional dancing, boomerang and spear throwing and didgeridoo playing.

Emma said being able to attend the day of activities was a great experience.

“It was a pleasure to attend Quandamooka Jarums as part of Svitzer Australia’s support of the camp, and to experience an excellent cultural talk from a local elder uncle who gave a wonderful history overview about the local Quandamooka people, and their traditions and customs. We were also treated to local fish and turtle curry for lunch!

The camp is hosted by the Yulu-Burri-Ba Aboriginal Corporation and Dunwich State School and is an opportunity to learn first-hand about local culture, including Indigenous dancing, weaving and history from Elders and mentors.
