Svitzer assists in Alma Doepel’s return to water

Svitzer Australia tugs and crew were alongside to assist as Australia’s oldest known vessel, Alma Doepel, a three-masted schooner as she was returned to the water in Docklands, Victoria over the weekend.

Built in 1903 and at 118 years old, Alma Doepel has recently undergone a long restoration project. Situated on a barge in Docklands, Alma Doepel was returned to the water in a complex and delicate operation, which involved two cranes positioned onboard AAL Shanghai. Svitzer tugs maneuvered the barge with Alma alongside AAL Shanghai, where she was lifted into the water in a sling by the cranes onboard the ship.

Once the barge was towed away, Svitzer tugs Eureka and Daintree made fast to the Alma and moved her up the Yarra River to Victoria Dock in the Port of Melbourne where restoration works will be completed.

Svitzer Australia’s Port Manager for Victoria, Peter Cream acknowledged Eureka and Daintree’s crew:

“Our crews onboard Eureka and Daintree were integral in the return of Alma Doepel to the water, and Svitzer is proud to have been able to support this momentous occasion. We look forward to seeing Alma Doepel out on the Yarra once the restoration work is complete.”

Owned by Sail and Adventure, a not for profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of youth through sail training, the Alma Doepel will recommence providing training opportunities for youth following the complete restoration.
