Meet Our Trainee Tug Master – Storm Hardy

MEET STORM HARDY

OUR TRAINEE TUG MASTER

Today on World Maritime Day we celebrate our seafaring colleagues around the world – it is because of their personal sacrifices that the rest of us can enjoy basic pleasures of life. Let us all do our part to recognise the invaluable service that seafarers carry out.

And at Svitzer, we would be nothing without our skilled and dedicated people.

To celebrate World Maritime Day, today we’d like to introduce Storm Hardy who is at the beginning of her career with Svitzer Australia as a Trainee Tug Master in the port of Darwin, Northern Territory.

Coming from a long line of mariners – her great grandmother was the first female to have a skipper’s ticket in Tasmania! – for Storm, a career on the water working on boats and in the maritime industry was always calling.

“I have been on the water since I was a baby, my father is a commercial fisherman, both my grandfathers were commercial fishermen, so it was just natural for me to go down the marine path but fishing in Tasmania was not for me.

“When working in Darwin harbour on passenger ferries I would always see big ships come into port, it always fascinated me. I never really knew what path I would take in the marine industry, but I knew I wanted to move onto bigger things, and specifically working on tugs. It has always been a dream of mine, have always loved watching what they do.”

Storm has a great passion for pursuing her dream and takes inspiration from her father who is a commercial fisherman, and is motivated daily by her family.

“I started working with my dad crayfishing in Tasmania from a young age. He taught me the importance of working hard to strive for what you want.

“It’s not just a job or career for me it’s a real passion, with so much to learn and I want to learn all that I can! Also, I have a 4-year-old and I want him to grow up to be proud of his mum and hopefully pass on the passion I have.”

Even her spare time is spent near and on the water, enjoying all the Top End offers, going fishing and camping with family.

A typical day for Storm currently involves a lot of study as she undertakes her Master <35 course (Master 4), and she’s very much looking forward to completing her course to commence her onboard training.

And as she commences her Master traineeship with Svitzer, and looks forward to furthering her skills and knowledge in the industry, Storm’s attitude to taking on a challenge will ensure she’s set up for success:

“I feel I have always been a hard worker and even if I’m terrified, I will give anything a go. Don’t let fear hold you back!”

Storm, we wish you all the best as you take on this next challenge and look forward to seeing you out on the water in Darwin soon!
