On 13 September 2011, SVITZER assisted berthing the world’s largest bulk carrier, the “VALE BRASlL”, in Sohar Port, Oman. Like her sister ValeMax vessels, the gigantic VALE BRASIL, measuring 362 meters in length and 65 meters across the beam, is able to carry up to 400,000 tonnes of iron ore in one load – equal to about 11,150 trucks.

Everyone involved had carefully planned the berthing operation. The port performed simulations of local conditions while pilots and tug crews carried out simulations of
the berthing operation itself. This way, all crews were prepared for any possible scenario – with special emphasis on securing the highest level of communication between the pilots and the four tugs involved in the operation.

For Sohar Port and SVITZER as the towage operator, this was another milestone in the port’s relatively short existence. SVITZER proved that we are ready to take on new and challenging tasks, and Sohar Port has secured future growth with the Vale steel plant. Since the initial berthing SVITZER have berthed one more of the ValeMax bulk carriers in Sohar, and with the steel plant in full operation, this is now a part of the scope of our work in Sohar Port.
